What Our Students Say About Us

About GRE®

What is the GRE test structure?

The GRE test tests 3 skills: 1. Analytical Writing 2. Verbal Reasoning, and 3. Quantitative Reasoning

The GRE test begins with the analytical writing measure. The analytical writing measure consists of two types of writing tasks –  Analyze an issue task, and Analyze an argument task. For each task, you have 30 minutes to type your response. The Analytical writing section is scored from 0-6 points.

Both verbal reasoning and quantitative reasoning measures consist of two sections each. These sections can appear in any order after the analytical writing section.

Verbal Reasoning: Each verbal reasoning section contains 20 questions, and you have 30 minutes to complete each section. The score of the Verbal Reasoning measure is from 130 to 170 points.

Quantitative Reasoning:  Each quantitative reasoning section contains 20 questions, and you have 35 minutes to complete each section. The score of the Quantitative Reasoning measure is also from 130 to 170  points.

The GRE test also includes

Either an unscored section or a research section. This section can be either Verbal Reasoning or Quantitative Reasoning.

This section is unidentified i.e. you won’t be able to make out where this section is placed in the test.

If you should receive a research section, it will be clearly identified and will always be the last section of the test

Whether you receive an unscored section or a research section, your answers to these questions will not count toward your score. You should treat each section as if it counts toward your score and try to do your best in all sections.

How is the GRE scored?

The Verbal Reasoning section and the Quantitative Reasoning section are scored on a scale of 130-170 in 1-point increments. The Analytical Writing section is scored on a scale of 0–6 in 0.5 increments.

How long is the GRE test?

The overall testing time for the GRE ® General Test is about 3 hours and 45 minutes.

What is the GRE test fee?

The GRE test fee is USD 213. Beginning November 1, 2022, the GRE General Test fee will increase by USD 15 worldwide.

What is the meaning of the adaptive nature of the GRE test?2022-10-17T16:55:00+05:30

The Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections are section-level adaptive. The first operational section of each measure (i.e., Verbal and Quantitative) is of average difficulty. The difficulty level of the second section of each of the measures depends on your overall performance on the first section of that measure.

For example, if for the Quantitative measure, you do very well on the first quant section, the second section of the Quant will be at a higher level of difficulty. If you have not done well in the first section, the second section might be easier or similar.

The computer selects the second operational section of a measure based on your performance in the first section.
