Shorter GRE General Test 2023: What You Need to Know

What is changing?

1. The unscored section and scheduled break will be eliminated. 2. AWA will have only 1 task 3. Quantitative and Verbal Reasoning sections are going to be of shorter durations with less number of questions.

Time duration of the exam

The testing time for the GRE® General Test will be reduced by half, from nearly 4 hours to just under 2 hours.

Quantitative Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning Sections

There will be two Quantitative Reasoning sections with a total of 27 questions and two Verbal Reasoning sections with a total of 27 questions.

Analytical Writing Assessment Task revision

The Analytical Writing section will include the “Analyze an Issue” task. The “Analyze an Argument” task will be removed.

Release date for Shorter GRE

On September 22, 2023. If you register to take the GRE General Test on September 22, 2023, or later, you are registering for the shorter test.

Exam Timeline

No change. You can take the GRE General Test once every 21 days, up to five times within any continuous rolling 12-month period (365 days).

Scores Delivery

Scores will be delivered within 8–10 days of testing
