TOEFL® is a trademark of the Educational Testing Service (ETS), which designs and administers the tests. Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL®) is considered as one of the most ideal tests to assess your proficiency in the English language and required by most U.S. colleges.

The TOEFL is a check of basic skills – Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing (the four sections of the test) – the same things students learn during their school years. TOEFL® is not just a test you have to get through. It’s actually considered as a measure of whether or not you will be able to survive through in a college where English is the priority language. Each of the four sections corresponds to something you’ll actually have to do; like reading through a textbook for an assignment, listening to a teacher to take notes for a project, etc.

The test is composed of 100% academic questions and tasks. The TOEFL® helps you prove that you possess the necessary skills in English which you use in an academic classroom. In the test, you may read a passage from a textbook and listen to a lecture and then speak or write in response, just like you would in a classroom.

A TOEFL® score is accepted at over 9,000 colleges and universities in over 130 countries, including nearly every top university in the U.S., Canada, and Australia. Since 2011, students from around the world can also use their TOEFL® scores as part of their student visa applications. You will not be able to get a visa if your TOEFL® score is low.

Preparing for the TOEFL® exam requires intensive studying as it is strictly formatted in each of its sections. This studying should encompass all four of the main English criteria. The test is four hours in length and is scored from 0 to 120, with each of the four sections counted as 30 points apiece. Your scores are valid for two years. Most universities will require students to have a standard minimum acceptable score to be somewhere between the 80s to 90s. Top universities may require a score of 100 or above.
